Orji Kalu Pleads With The Court For Bail Base On Health Challenges

The former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, who was recently sentenced to 12 years imprisonment over 7.1 Billion naira fraud and money laundering, has prayed the Court of Appeal in Lagos to grant him bail, pending the hearing of his appeal.

Ex Abia State Gov Orji Kalu, who was recently convicted of the offences by Justice Mohammad Idris on December 5, is serving his term at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos.

The application he filed on Tuesday, he told the appellate court that he is having a very serious health challenges that the medical facilities in the prison is not up to standard to treat his illness.

He emphasized that as the Chief Whip of the Senate and the senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, the interest of his constituents would be in jeopardy if he was kept behind bars.

As stated by him, since he’s guilty of a criminal offence by the verdict of a jury or the decision of a judge in a court of law, the appellate court should free him while he challenges his conviction

The respondent in Kalu’s application is the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

EFCC counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, opposed the post-conviction bail application.
