I Will Not Stop Street Trading, Some Are Breadwinners-Gov Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, has promised not to stop street trading in Oyo State.

The governor also said he would not arrest street traders as it is being done in some other states.

Makinde, who was speaking on major issues in the state on Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) was asked when and how he will put an end to street trading in Oyo.

In his reply, he noted that street trading can not be eradicated overnight.

Some of them are breadwinners, and that is their main source of income. I agree it's very dangerous. Our position is, we can't chase them off the street without an alternative.

The ones removed from Ojoo, were moved to the Akinyele trailer park. At scout camp, we reduced the rent for stalls and ordered installation of electricity, toilets etc. we have to be careful we don't take away their means of livelihood without offering alternatives.

Dealing with the issue of street trading requires careful planning and implementation by the government, he said.

This decision of Makinde has made many to laud and adulate him. Some also compare him to Lagos State where street traders are being arrested and imprisoned.
